Q&A with Sunny Chen, Chief Executive Officer

Q: What is your organization’s role in helping families with young children who’ve been affected by the wildfires on Maui? What was your immediate response after the fires?
A: On Day 2 of the fires, Healthy Mothers Healthy Babies (HMHB) was immediately shipping out baby essentials such as food, diapers and wipes. By Day 3 of the fires, HMHB staff were physically present in Lahaina and our mobile clinic from Oʻahu was on its way to Maui. We felt the need to provide as much support as we possibly could. As a result of our connections with different organizations, we were able to provide first aid, medications, diapers, lactation support, and mental health support right away.

Q: What are the current needs of families with young children on Maui?
A: The current needs of families with young children on Maui are housing, financial stability, access to clinical care, food security, and mental health support.

Q: What are your needs in order to continue to provide services to families with young children on Maui in the long term?
A: We need more staffing and sustainable funding to continue providing consistent, quality care to Maui families affected by the Lahaina fires. We also need to build stronger relationships with other community organizations and nonprofits, and work together to better serve the Maui community.
